Patricia C. Wrede

Patricia C. Wrede (b. March 27, 1953) is an American writer of many beloved works of fantasy for young adults. She grew up in a house filled with books, and finished her first book in 1978 (Shadow Magic, first of the Lyra books, published in 1982) while working in finance. In 1985, she made the decision to pursue writing full-time. 1985 also saw the publication of Talking to Dragons, the first book (now the fourth chronologically) of perhaps her most popular series, the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. (Talking to Dragons was later revised to be more consistent with the rest of the series). Her other works include several stand-alone novels and a short story collection, and two fantasy series set in the Regency era: the epistolary Kate and Cecelia books, written with Caroline Stevermer, and the Magic and Malice books, featuring a gentleman wizard named Mairelon.
